8 Bells - Camden, ME

The heart of Mechanic Street—through fair winds and blizzards.

For those who remember the Camden of decades ago—when the nightlife was vibrant, and the streets stayed humming long after sunset with spots like Gilbert's and the original Sea Dog—the opening of this authentic Irish pub feels less like a new business and more like a homecoming. As Camden slowly became a sleepy coastal town, 8 Bells Camden was just the caffeine shot it desperately needed.

Located at 45 Mechanic Street, overlooking the Megunticook River, 8 Bells has quickly become the gathering room of Camden.

The Visionaries & The Building

The pub is the brainchild of Tom Ryan and Abby Kidder. Tom, a mariner with 25 years of experience, brought his seafaring soul to the project—the name "8 Bells" itself is a nod to the end of a maritime watch. Together, they’ve transformed the space into a sanctuary of dark wood, warm lighting, and a roaring stove that makes you forget the Maine winter exists outside.

The building’s history is woven into the industrial fabric of Mechanic Street, but under Tom and Abby’s care, it has shed its utilitarian past to embrace the "craic" (the Irish spirit of fun and conversation).

The Vibe: A Local Stronghold

While many spots in Camden cater to the seasonal tourist trade, 8 Bells is unapologetically for the locals.

It is the kind of place where:

The "Snowday Party" is a rite of passage: When the nor'easters hit, and the rest of the town shuts down, the locals pull up their boots, zip up their parkas, and trudge through the drifts because they know the lights will be on at 8 Bells.

The Atmosphere is Authentic: There are no neon signs or gimmicks. Instead, you’ll find a curated selection of specialty whiskeys (like Tom’s favorite, Powers) and a perfect pour of Guinness.

The Music is the Heartbeat: Live Irish folk, fiddles, and pub tunes are regular fixtures, often featuring local favorites like The Oystermen or Jimmy Moreland, and even some from afar, like Simple Things, from Ireland.

The Back Deck: When summer hits, grab your cocktails and lounge out back of the deck offering views of Megunticook river, and the surrounding Camden Hills.

The Menu: Elevated Handhelds

Don't come looking for a three-course sit-down dinner. 8 Bells stays true to the pub tradition with a focused, high-quality menu of handheld bar food. It’s honest, salty, and satisfying:

Warm Bread & Irish Butter: No matter what’s going on in your day, there is nothing quite as restorative as their warm bread and Irish butter. It’s a humble pairing elevated by quality. The bread arrives crusty and steaming, but the real star is the thick slab of genuine Irish butter.

Warm Sweet and Spicy Mixed Nuts: Then there are the warm sweet and spicy mixed nuts, which are dangerously addictive. They hit that perfect trifecta of salty, savory, and subtly sweet. I never go without ordering these suckers.

Meat Pies & Sausage Rolls: Sourced from the local legends at the Portable Pie Place.

Ploughman’s Boards: Simple, classic, and perfect for sharing over a round of drinks. Ham, cheddar, egg, fruit, veggies, bread.

The "8 Bells" Old Fashioned: A signature cocktail made with Guinness-maple syrup and sea salt saline—a literal taste of the Maine coast meeting the Irish shore.

The Verdict

8 Bells isn't just a bar; it’s a revival. It has successfully reclaimed a piece of Camden’s lost watering holes, providing a warm and soulful anchor for the community. Whether it’s a sunny Tuesday or the middle of a blizzard, if you’re looking for the heart of the town, just follow the sound of the fiddle to Mechanic Street.
