A Classic Maine Lobster Bake

Good views, great food, the best people, and above all, TRADITION.

We cruised on over to Sheep Island on the William’s Fishing Vessel: Total Eclipse. Sheep Island is a place that so many Midcoast Mainers hold close to their heart. More on this magical place later!

Music, Memories, and Multi-Generational Magic:

Most everyone loves the fresh seafood, but what truly elevates the day, however, is who you share it with. There is something profoundly special about sharing an experience like this across multiple generations, watching kids, parents, and grandparents all gathered around the same beach making memories together.

This isn't just dinner—it is the event of the summer. It is the kind of magic that stays in your heart and your mind, keeping you warm and carrying you right through those long, cold New England winters.

This year’s bake was made even more unforgettable with Aidan Kazinski crushing tunes and setting the soundtrack for the day. We are endlessly lucky to be included annually by our friends who put this all together each year—a super tight-knit group who knows how to have fun, celebrate life, and throw a gathering for the ages.

The Location:

Sheep Island in Owls Head, Maine, is a 59-acre protected public nature preserve in West Penobscot Bay. Acquired by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust in late 2021 to prevent private development, the uninhabited island features cobble beaches, dense forests, and rocky ledges popular with local boaters and birdwatchers.

What is a Traditional Maine Lobster Bake?

At its heart, a traditional bake is a masterclass in elemental cooking. Steeped in centuries-old heritage, the classic method relies on layering:

The Foundation: A roaring fire built over a pit of rocks until they are white-hot.

The Insulation: A thick, damp blanket of fresh seaweed placed over the hot stones to create a natural steam chamber.

The Feast: Layers of sweet whole lobsters, steamers (soft-shell clams), fresh corn on the cob, red potatoes, and savory onions, all packed tightly to steam to absolute perfection.

It is rustic, communal, and deeply connected to the rhythm of the sea.

This crew, however, steps up the feast. Alongside the legendary steamed clams, sweet corn, potatoes, and massive Maine lobsters, our spread features an incredible array of massive Flintstones-style steaks, oysters, and specialty meats to satisfy every craving alongside the seafood classics.

THANK YOU to The Williams for making this happen each year. It’s a huge amount of effort, but the memories you create will span generations! Thank you to the WHOLE Sheep Island crew for all the work you put in and for making us feel like we belong.

Have YOU ever been to a LOBSTER BAKE?!
