Blue Barren Distillery & Restaurant
Where the mountains meet the sea, and the food steals the show!
We've been dragging our feet on this one, solely because this is our fav outdoor hang spot, and we don't want anyone stealing our bar stools!
Known locally as both Blue Barren and Barren's Distillery + Restaurant, this dockside gem on the "quiet side" of Camden Harbor brings a highly intentional, deeply rooted approach to Maine craft spirits and seaside dining. Offering an incredible backdrop of classic rigging and open water, it stands out as a vibrant neighborhood anchor that seamlessly blends local agricultural heritage with transatlantic hospitality.
The Owners and Building History
The story behind the distillery is a classic tale of local friendship and collaborative innovation. It was founded by Andrew Stewart, a Scotland native who operated the Hope General Store for nearly a decade before opening Camden’s beloved, late-great Drouthy Bear pub, and Jeremy Howard, a seventh-generation wild blueberry farmer from Brodis Blueberries in nearby Hope. The idea sparked organically over pub conversation as a creative way to support Maine's iconic wild blueberry industry during an economic squeeze.
They set up shop right on the wharf in a small, dark blue industrial building at The Wharf at Lyman-Morse. The building originally served as a bustling shipyard machine shop, matching the hard-working maritime character of the harbor. Though the main distilling operations eventually moved up to a scenic ridge at the farm in Hope to expand production, the seasonal Camden waterfront site remains the ultimate destination to experience their spirits.
Atmosphere and Menu Standouts
The vibe here is laid-back yet refined, managing to feel both deeply connected to Midcoast Maine's landscape and subtly reminiscent of an old-world tavern. Sitting out on the seasonal wooden deck gives you a front-row seat to the boatyard's gentle harbor traffic, capturing the perfect balance of a working waterfront and an upscale retreat. Inside, the design honors its industrial machine-shop bones while creating an inviting, warm space for locals and visitors to gather. Upstairs, they have a light-filled space for extra seating and events, overlooking Camden Harbor through the wall of glass windows.
While the scenery draws you in, the food and drink keep you firmly planted in your seat:
The Drouthy Connection: For those who deeply miss the Drouthy Bear, the nachos here feel like a beautiful, comforting piece of that beloved Scottish pub has traveled right down to the waterfront. They are an absolute must-order.
Top-Tier Eats: The kitchen completely nails the classics. Their Smash Burger has easily earned the title of favorite in town—juicy, perfectly seared, and flawless. For a decadent, uniquely Maine twist on a pub staple, the lobster-topped deviled eggs are phenomenal.
Signature Sips: While they excel at rotating vibrant seasonal selections featuring their own craft spirits (like their famous wild blueberry Eau de Vie or Sugar Kelp Vodka), the absolute standout drink is their Paper Plane—expertly balanced, sharp, and the ultimate cocktail to sip while watching the boats roll in. You can also buy bottles of your favorite spirit to take home!
A Masterclass in Service
What truly sets Barren’s apart, though, is the fantastic staff and the welcoming, high-energy atmosphere cultivated by everyone on the floor.
Behind the bar, Althea is an absolute force. With 21 years of industry experience under her belt, she knows exactly what she’s doing and has the whole mixology thing down to a precise science. Her skills clearly speak for themselves—during a recent visit, a traveling customer next to us remarked on his way out that he's been everywhere, and her Mojitos are exactly how they serve them in Miami.
Out on the deck, Erica handles the outdoor tables with absolute grace. She is incredibly sweet and remained completely unflappable, happily providing answers to the endless stream of curious questions we kept throwing her way.
To top it all off, both Andrew and Jeremy are exceptionally present and attentive owners. On any given visit, you’ll see them hustling and bustling behind the scenes to keep everything running seamlessly, yet they always make a point to slide out, say hello, and check in on guests. That kind of genuine hospitality is exactly why we will be back for more.
Beyond the Harbor: The Hope Farm Experience
If you love what they are doing on the waterfront, taking the short drive inland to their main production facility at 87 Jones Hill Road in Hope is highly recommended. Set right on the historic Brodis Blueberries farm, this location shifts the focus from coastal harbor views to sweeping, scenic ridges covered in wild blueberry barrens.
The Hope farm operates as a lively summer event hub rather than a traditional indoor restaurant. It plays host to vibrant "Wild Weekends" and summer gatherings that perfectly capture inland Midcoast culture. It is the ultimate laid-back spot to sip a cocktail made straight from the source while looking out over the very fields where the fruit was harvested.
If you’re a southern kid, Barren’s has also opened a tasting room and general store in Portland. The Old Port location brings the spirit of Blue Barren to the heart of Portland's historic waterfront district. Stop in to taste the full lineup at 324 Fore Street.
Ok, the secret is out... But, if you see us Munchies bursting down the wharf, looking for our bar stool, you better bust a move OR buy us a bevy :)
Pro Tip: You can take the free water taxi back and forth from downtown Camden!
