Bill and Rachel hit the mid-coast beach scene
So we’re approaching the upcoming three-day weekend, and you know what, I kinda wanted to meet my girl for drinks halfway home from Bath, so we met at the Narrows Tavern in Waldoboro.
We settled into the local vibe and ordered some drinks, knowing that we were starting our gorgeous, maybe WAY too hot, afternoon off together.
Vicky, at The Narrows Tavern, was a well-established local, taking good care of the regulars and us alike. We ordered the haddock tacos and the blackened chicken bowl (think tortilla shell salad with all the fajita fun included). Both were excellent, especially with the special hot sauce that had no name. Ask for it by no name.
The vibe inside is that of a classic, dark, local tavern featuring warm wood floors, exposed brick, and a refinished bar.
Beyond its role as a restaurant, the tavern has established itself as an active participant in Waldoboro’s community. It is well-regarded for its "open 365 days a year" policy, demonstrating a dedication to the local workforce and residents alike. They host fundraisers for the community and actively try to keep the charm in Waldoboro.
Patrons next to us raved about their creative daily specials, which change regularly to keep the menu fresh and exciting for locals.
When it comes to favorites, the locals also highlighted their pub-style comfort food. The wings got a shout-out as a standout, particularly when served with their homemade blue cheese dressing. Another dish that earns high marks from patrons is the bourbon steak tips, which are often highlighted for being perfectly cooked.
After buying a couple of PBRs for a couple of very friendly locals who looked like the heat had almost killed them, we ended up feeling like part of the scene, which at any worthy local spot is the vibe you hope materializes, but it’s never guaranteed.
We decided that Maine is just too beautiful to spend this gorgeous day inside, so we made our way up the coast to Clark Island beach. Why....because it is an absolute gem and one of the most chill, amazing, peaceful spots you can find in Maine.
We brought white wine and cheap foam cups, and after a stunning drive out to St. George, parked at The Causeway Restaurant. The Causeway is a killer spot, worth the drive, with an excellent cocktail menu and even better curated whisky/bourbon options for the palatably inclined. The view from the outdoor deck is perfection.
After a tasty margarita we decided to head out to the point and get our feet muddy, to feel the ocean on our legs, and to watch the dozens of hermit crabs fight over who could try and eat our toes first.
At an intersection of positive karma and a glorious afternoon, we were surprised by a lone man, 200 yards away, who decided to bring his bagpipes to the beach. He was actually incredible, and while the tide made its way out, we slow danced to the heartstrings that every bagpipe pulls from you, as the sun set.
He walked past us as he was leaving, and we talked to him. I asked him why he was playing. He simply said with an innocence and a smile, " I just thought this gorgeous day would be even better with bagpipes." Well, sir, you were damn right.
