Stress Free Moose - Greenville, ME
The non-negotiable, must-stop on your way into town.
Having close friends (what’s up, Morongs!) who own a sweet house right in the heart of downtown Greenville, steps from Moosehead Lake, is basically winning the Upta Camp lottery. Joining them on their Moosehead adventures is already peak Maine living, but the fact that they also love nothing more than hitting every bar and restaurant in town to laugh until their stomach muscles ache? Well, it’s no wonder we’ve been friends for so long.
When you're rolling through town with a crew like that, there is one absolute non-negotiable stop: The Stress Free Moose.
The Little House That Could
The Stress Free Moose is practically a Greenville legend, and its transformation over the years is nothing short of iconic. Long before it was the lively hub it is today, the spot started out as a humble little residential house (in fact, local rumor has it that a few area families actually grew up inside those walls!). Owned and operated locally by Stacy Duncan—who is often spotted behind the bar pouring cold ones with the fastest tap-hand in the North Woods—it grew from a cozy house to a small pub with an outdoor patio, and eventually expanded into a massive, multi-level powerhouse complete with a walk-up outdoor bar!
While downstairs is a busy bar vibe, the unique room upstairs has wood walls covered in visitors' markings showing they were there. If you have a large party, it can be made into a private room with some advance notice upon request. In the summer, it leads to an outdoor deck and bar!
Stress Free is the absolute spot for locals to grab a cold beer and catch up, right alongside camp owners, snowmobilers, and lost tourists trying to find their way to Lily Bay. If you walk in a stranger, you’ll leave with three new fishing buddies and an inside joke by the time you reach the bottom of your first glass.
The Food & Fuel
While the atmosphere is pure standard-issue Maine perfection, the menu steps way past standard pub grub. You cannot hit the Moose without getting down to business on a few fan favorites:
The Buffalo: Whenever the Buffalo Wrap is on special, our friend, D, jumps on it without hesitation. Her hubby always goes with a basket of crispy, saucy Buffalo Wings- and trust me, the guy knows his buff wings!
The Southwest Chicken Rice Bowl (My Go-To): A massive, vibrant bowl loaded with a warm base of fluffy seasoned rice, tender grilled chicken, black beans, sweet corn, melted cheddar-jack, and crisp diced tomatoes, all topped with a dollop of sour cream and a drizzle of smoky chipotle mayo. It’s fresh, hearty, packed with zesty flavor, and the ultimate satisfying meal after a long day out on the lake or the trails.
The Famous Pastrami Reuben: Smothered, stacked, and practically larger than a small child. You need two hands and absolute commitment to finish it.
Unbelievable Steak Tips: Tender, perfectly seasoned, and ideal for refueling after a day out on the lake or trailing through the woods.
The Massive Prime Rib (when it’s available): This thing is an absolute unit—easily the biggest prime rib you'll ever lay eyes on. Cooked to absolute perfection with that juicy, melt-in-your-mouth center and seasoned crust, it carries a higher price tag, but it is 100% worth every single penny (especially if you split it with a buddy).
The Restrooms... If You Know, You Know
Now, we have to talk about the real crown jewel of the Stress Free Moose experience: the restroom walls.
We won't spoil the full gag for the uninitiated, but let’s just say if you head back to take a piddle, prepare yourself for a laugh. If you know, you know.
At the end of the day, with great friends, a central house near Moosehead Lake, a cold drink in hand, and a basket of wings in front of you, life in Greenville really is 100% stress-free.
