The Keag Store - South Thomaston, ME

A True Taste of Midcoast Maine

The Munchies Duo cruised the coastline out to South Thomaston to hop on a boat for some oyster farming, courtesy of the one and only Aphrodite Oysters!

The second we passed the 'Keag Store that everyone talks about, Bill whipped the car around—he was going to simply DIE if he didn't have a freshly made breakfast sandwich before our big day farming on the water.

The menu was bangin', but we didn't realize someone had placed an order for 10,000 breakfast burritos just before us! Since everything is made fresh to order, we were off to a great start, pissing off the captain by showing up a little late to hop on the boat. Just kidding— Krista E. Tripp was patient with us, but we definitely did not nail the arrival. More to come on Krista's incredible oyster operation soon!

If you are looking for the heart of the midcoast fishing community in South Thomaston, you’ll find it right along Route 73 at the ‘Keag Store (pronounced "gig," as the locals will tell you). Don’t mess that up, they’ll know right then you’re “from away.” This isn't just a convenience store; it’s a genuine community hub and a must-visit spot for anyone traveling through the area.

The Food

The kitchen at the ‘Keag punches well above its weight, offering a menu that feels both comforting and surprisingly creative. For breakfast, you’ll find unique gems like their cranberry walnut pancakes or their hearty, traditional fish hash. If you stop by for lunch, the grill is always firing, serving up classic fried seafood and, in my opinion, their standout offering: fresh-dough pizza. Personally, our sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sammy was perfection! We ended up going back for lunch after our excursion for a delish steak and cheese sub! Whether you're dining in at the counter or grabbing a bite to go, the food consistently hits the spot.

The Atmosphere

What truly sets this place apart is the location. Situated right by the Weskeag Reversing Falls, the store offers a spectacular backdrop. Watching the tides rush in or out—a process that happens twice a day—is a beautiful experience that feels like a hidden slice of Maine history. The area was settled back in 1767 specifically to harness these tides for mills, and you can still feel that industrious, salt-of-the-earth energy today.

Why It’s a Must-Visit

The ‘Keag Store is the perfect "Maine moment." It’s an ideal pitstop if you’re heading toward Birch Point State Park or exploring the Owls Head area. It’s unpretentious, welcoming, and captures the authentic spirit of our region. Whether you're a local fueling up for the day or a visitor looking to grab a quick, delicious lunch with a view, make sure to add the ‘Keag to your Midcoast bucket list.
