An Oopsie That Turned Into an Oh Yeah!

It all started with a Facebook Marketplace fail that turned into a total find! I found a desk on Facebook Marketplace, and we hopped in the truck, only to learn that we were going to the wrong town and the actual destination was over an hour away. Whitefield and Winthrop are 2 different towns- sorry, Honey! So we rerouted and got on the road to Winthrop to score that desk.

On the way, we passed this cool little place called The White Duck Brew Pub, and we couldn't go all that way without a taste-test adventure.

Located right off Route 202 in Winthrop, White Duck Brew Pub brings fresh energy to a historic spot next to the Lakeside Marina. Originally operating as the White Duck Inn back in the 1940s, the space was revived by local veteran and hero Travis Mills alongside partners Zach Stewart, Bill Logan, and Andy Ferran. Today, it delivers elevated, scratch-made pub fare paired with a lively community atmosphere.

Atmosphere & Vibe

The White Duck strikes a great balance between a neighborhood local joint and an impressive destination dining spot. The interior design pays homage to its historic roots with warm, rustic accents, comfortable seating, and a welcoming layout. Outside, the spacious outdoor patio comes alive during warmer months, featuring plenty of seating, yard games, and regular live music right by the water.

Scratch-Made Starters, Sauces & Dressings

What really separates The White Duck from standard pub stops is their absolute commitment to a scratch kitchen. Rather than pulling bottled dressings off a delivery truck, their kitchen team crafts nearly all their sauces, dips, dressings, and condiments in-house, adding complex layer after layer of flavor to every plate.

Dressings Made Right:

The salad lineup features real house-made classics, from a proper Creamy Anchovy Caesar and a zestier Southwest Caesar to thick Chunky Blue Cheese loaded with real crumbles, Herbed Citrus Vinaigrette, Creamy Balsamic, House Buttermilk Herb, Honey Mustard, and 1000 Island.

Signature Aiolis & Sauces:

You'll find custom-blended touches everywhere—a bright Lemon Dill Aioli over pan-seared East Coast crab cakes, a smoky Red Pepper Remoulade with crispy calamari, and a slow-cooked House BBQ for braised meats.

Jams & Preserves:

Depending on the season, they incorporate sticky, slow-rendered Bacon & Onion Jams onto rotating burger specials and house berry compotes onto charcuterie and desserts.

House Marinara:

Built from the ground up, high-quality plum tomatoes are simmered low and slow with garlic, olive oil, fresh sweet basil, oregano, and a touch of crushed red pepper. It’s rich, bright, and naturally sweet without extra sugars.

Food Highlights

Everything from the kitchen comes out fresh, generous, and packed with flavor:

Chicken Parm Sandwich: A definite hit! Crispy, golden chicken cutlet smothered in melted cheese and savory sauce. Pro tip: Order a side cup of their homemade marinara sauce for extra dipping—it takes it to a whole other level.

The Dry Rub Wings: These were absolute perfection. House-brined and coated in their signature seasoning blend, the skin gets crisp while keeping the meat juicy. They were served alongside their homemade bleu cheese, which was completely spot-on—thick, creamy, and packed with real chunk crumbles.

Duck Confit Poutine: A standout starter. Crispy fries layered with rich gravy, cheese curds, and tender duck confit make it an absolute necessity for sharing.

The 1/2 lb White Duck Pub Burger: Juicy, seasoned to perfection, cooked just right, and served on a fresh bun—it consistently ranks among the best burgers in Kennebec County.

Fresh Seafood Options: From crispy beer-battered fish and chips with citrus caper tartar to pan-seared crab cakes and steamed mussels, the kitchen manages seafood with impressive freshness.

Comfort Classics: The menu rounds out nicely with scratch-made pulled pork tacos, cottage pie, and creamy baked mac and cheese.

Drinks & Hospitality

The tap list leans heavily into local Maine craft breweries, featuring collaboration brews alongside regional favorites, well-executed seasonal cocktails, and local spirits. Service is prompt, welcoming, and down-to-earth from the moment you walk through the door.

Behind the bar, they offer a great mix of local Maine craft drafts alongside a full spirits selection—including my go-to, Hornitos. Their bartender mixed up a perfectly made Old Fashioned: well-balanced, smooth, not overly sweet, and crafted with exact precision.

The Verdict

If you also find yourself in the midst of a Facebook Marketplace fail out this way, The White Duck Brew Pub is a gem worth visiting!
