We love a good Public House!
The Newcastle Public House sits in a structure that feels like the very soul of Midcoast Maine. Located in the heart of Newcastle, the building carries the weight and charm of local history, having served various purposes over the decades before becoming the community staple it is today. The "public house" concept is perfectly realized here—the gorgeous old architecture, the creaky floors, and the warm, wood-heavy interior create an atmosphere that feels both historic and inviting.
For years, this was a go-to destination. In the pre-COVID era, it was a place of consistency and comfort, offering exactly what you’d want from a neighborhood pub. However, recent visits have unfortunately told a different story.
The Experience
There is a genuine desire to love this place; the aesthetic and the concept are a "perfect image" of Maine hospitality. On our last three visits, however, the kitchen has struggled to meet the standards set by the building’s charm. We’ve returned multiple times, hoping the previous experience was just an off night, but the consistency isn't there.
The Wings: We tried the Garlic Parmesan Butter Wings, which arrived extremelyyy dry. More concerningly, the meal was followed by an immediate stomachache, which cast a shadow over the rest of the evening.
The Roasted Turkey Sandwich: On paper, this sounds like a winner—featuring bacon and cranberry mayo. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the experience with the wings or the general execution, it was difficult to enjoy more than a few bites.
Service & Atmosphere
The service felt a bit untethered during our last attempt. It appeared the house was being managed by a very young crew without much senior oversight, which might explain the slip in quality control from the kitchen.
The Bright Spot: The Bar
If you are stopping in strictly for a drink, the Public House still shines. Their dedication to the Maine craft beer scene is impressive, featuring a curated selection of heavy hitters such as:
Final Thoughts
It is heartbreaking to see a local favorite stumble. The Newcastle Public House has the "bones" and the beer list to be one of the best spots in the area. We want nothing more than for the food to return to its former glory so it can once again live up to the beautiful, historic space it occupies. Until then, it remains a great spot for a local pint, but proceed with caution regarding the menu.
Between wanting to love this place again and never learning our lesson the first (or fourth) time, I'm sure we will try it again down the road.
