Camden Deli - Camden, ME

Not just a sandwich shop with a view

It was a freezing, rainy, winter Maine day when the Duo got to our go-to morning biz meeting spot in Rockland, Home Kitchen Cafe, and it was closed. Gasp! Silly ol’ us forgot it was Tuesday and HKC staff needed a well-deserved break. But where could we get our business-meeting-cocktail before noon!? Off to Camden we went.

If you’re visiting the midcoast, Camden Deli is more than just a place to grab a sandwich—it’s a historical landmark with a front-row seat to one of the most beautiful harbors in the world.

Whether you're a first-timer or a returning fan, here is why this spot remains a staple.

A Slice of Camden History

The deli sits at 37 Main Street, part of a row of historic buildings that define Camden’s downtown. Most of these structures were rebuilt in 1893 following the "Great Camden Fire," which leveled much of the business district. For decades, this site has watched the evolution of the harbor, from a working industrial port to a world-class destination for schooners.

The deli itself has been a family-run institution since 1985. While many coastal businesses change hands every few years, Camden Deli has maintained a sense of continuity that locals appreciate. The building’s architecture is unique, essentially perched over the Megunticook River just as it spills into the harbor via the falls.

The Quality Comeback

There was a brief stint a few years back where some felt the deli was losing its way—the quality didn't quite seem to match the rising prices, and it felt like it was leaning more toward a "tourist stop" than the reliable local gem it once was.

However, I am happy to report that they have been back up to snuff for a while now! The portions are hearty again, the ingredients are fresh, and that classic "small-town eatery by the sea" charm is fully restored. Yay for the return of the gold standard!

Menu Standouts

While you can build your own sandwich from a massive list of meats, cheeses, and breads, their specialty list is where the magic happens.

Our personal favorites are:

The Monte Cristo: A perfectly executed classic - Baked ham, turkey breast, imported Swiss, honey mustard on sourdough, dipped in an egg batter and grilled.

The Fantastic Focaccia: My absolute favorite. It features sliced chicken breast, melted havarti, grilled onions, roasted red peppers, tomato, and a punchy pesto on grilled focaccia.

Bevies

To wash it all down, they offer a surprisingly sophisticated drink menu. You can grab a cold beer, a glass of wine, or a crisp Prosecco to enjoy with your meal.

If you aren't looking for spirits, they have a full range of soft drinks and hot drinks (the coffee is excellent on a foggy Maine morning).

They offer many local choices to support fellow Mainers, like Maine Root Root Beer, Wicked blueberry ale by Orono Brewing Company (made with Wyman's Blueberries!), Belfast Bay Brewing, Allagash Brewing Company, Shipyard Brewing Company, and Geary Brewing Company, among others. We love when businesses keep it local!

Breakfast at Camden Deli is defined by classic, reliable comfort food that you can enjoy while watching the morning light hit the harbor. Starting at 7:00 AM daily, it serves as a central hub for early risers and harbor workers alike.

While it is primarily known for its massive lunch menu, the breakfast offerings provide a solid start to the day with a focus on traditional deli staples.

Core Breakfast Menu Items:

You’ll find all the standard breakfast pillars, including fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and customizable omelets.

Our Favorite: Bandito Burrito - Scrambled eggs, roasted red peppers, Monterey Jack, sour cream and salsa in a wrap.

Handhelds and Quick Bites: For those heading out on a schooner or a hike, their breakfast sandwiches and fresh bagels are the most popular "grab-and-go" options.

The View: Having a simple coffee and an egg sandwich on the rooftop deck at 8:00 AM is one of the most peaceful ways to experience Camden before the midday crowds arrive.

Signature Sandwiches and Seasonal Specials

The "Schooner" sandwiches are the heart of the menu, but the kitchen also keeps things fresh with daily and seasonal additions.

Top Picks: Aside from the Monte Cristo and Fantastic Focaccia, the Selectman (turkey, havarti, and pesto) and the Olad (turkey, bacon, and Swiss) are perennial favorites.

Soup and Salads:

They offer seasonal soups by the cup or bowl, which are the perfect pairing for a crisp Maine afternoon. They also offer cold sides such as pasta salad.

Homemade Sweets:

The bakery case is filled daily with homemade desserts and pastries, ranging from oversized cookies to traditional Maine pies. The bakery items at Camden Deli are made in-house by their own team of bakers. The preparation takes place in a dedicated bakery space located right above the deli, ensuring that items are served fresh to customers daily.

Pro-Tips & Logistics

Special Summer Tip: On a busy July day, if you’re hoping to score a spot on the outdoor deck overlooking the harbor, head upstairs to order. They generally prefer deck-dwellers to use the upstairs waitresses rather than the main counter one on the ground floor to keep things moving smoothly.

Side note: The photo of the front of the building was taken by Coffee on the Porch- Camden, Maine, a page we highly suggest you follow if you love photos of Camden! His shots and videos capture the true essence.
